Periodontal disease is a serious bacterial infection of your gums that can cause tooth loss in 75% of adults if left untreated. Periodontal disease has also been linked to systemic disease such as diabetes and heart disease and to Low Birth Weight babies.

Gum disease describes swelling, soreness or infection of the tissues supporting the teeth. There are two main forms of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontal disease.

The first sign of gingivitis is blood on the toothbrush or in the rinsing water when you clean your teeth. Long-standing gingivitis can turn into periodontal disease, which affects the tissues supporting the teeth.

As the disease gets worse the bone anchoring the teeth in the jaw is lost, making the teeth loose. However, the disease develops very slowly in most people, and with regular monitoring and treatment it can be slowed down dramatically.

To prevent and treat gum disease, you need to make sure you remove all the plaque/debris from your teeth every day. This is done by brushing and flossing.
We will also regularly check for any signs of this problem and advise you accordingly.

Our Doctors are highly trained in this field and will also be able to advise you on how best to maintain your oral health as well as carrying out regular though cleaning above and below the gum line. Occasionally we may decide to refer advanced cases to a periodontal specialist.
